Excess baggage charges
The tables below show all the countries we fly from, and the excess baggage fees you may need to pay when flying from those countries. For bookings made before 23 May 2024, you can find the table of excess baggage fees here.
Please allow extra check-in time at the airport if you have excess baggage.
These charges apply to any items not already included in:
- Your ticket
- Any Prepaid Extra Bags you've purchased
- Your Airpoints membership benefits
There are simple ways to save money and time before you get to the airport. See if any of these tips can help you save on excess baggage fees.
Journeys on more than one airline
For customer journeys that involve more than one carrier, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Resolution 302 governs baggage allowances and charges, using a concept of the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) to determine whose baggage rules apply for the itinerary.
In those instances when Air New Zealand is the MSC, its excess baggage fees will apply.
If you have connecting flights with another airline on the same ticket, your excess baggage fee applies until you collect your bags.
If you will be checking in your baggage for another flight, you may have to pay that airline's excess baggage fees as well. Please check the other airline's excess baggage policies, as we can't manage them on your behalf.
The USA and Canada have special rules for excess baggage fees. If your ticketed journey starts or ends in the USA, and you have several check-in points, you'll pay the same excess baggage fee at each airport, regardless of airlines involved in your itinerary.
