Christchurch blends historic architecture and classic gardens with contemporary design. Take some time to roam the city. Once you're on the road, travel 150 kilometres from Christchurch to Temuka, a town known for its classic kiwi pottery established in 1931. Nearby in Pleasant Point you’ll find a museum showcasing steam locomotives. And then a short distance on in Timaru, visit Te Ana – a unique Māori cultural experience based on Ngāi Tahu culture – it houses the most significant collection of ancient Māori rock drawings in New Zealand.
85 kilometres further south lies Oamaru, famous for its beautifully restored precinct of Victorian-era buildings, traditional crafts and art galleries.
Old meets new in Dunedin
Visit Dunedin, a 90 minute drive from Oamaru. Here you will find one of the best collections of Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore ornate mansions, Gothic-styled churches and New Zealand’s only castle (Larnach Castle) with a vivid and memorable history. These days, Dunedin is also a lively university town with a creative community home to fashion designers, writers and artists.
The stunning landscapes & wines of Central Otago
The Central Otago region was once home to a gold mining rush and reminders such as stone cottages and miners trails remain in the area. Today, Central Otago is still known for its riches thanks to its thriving farming industry and award-winning vineyards. For an additional dose of history, and to see buildings created back in the 1860’s, visit Cromwell and it’s Cromwell Heritage Precinct.
For some relaxation and wine tastings, try one of the many vineyards dotted around the towns of Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell.
Or for a little action, hire a bike and take to one of the many cycle trails in the area such as the Otago Central Rail Trail or the Queenstown Trail.
Queenstown and Wanaka always impress
Finish your journey in the tourism hubs of Queenstown and Wanaka, towns set in spectacular locations surrounded by mountain ranges. Indulge in adventure activities in Queenstown or play a few rounds of golf at Jack's Point or Millbrook.
From nearby Wanaka, travel to the natural haven of Mt Aspiring National Park. Here mountains, glaciers, river valleys and alpine lakes wait to be explored.
