Frequent Flyer 12-Month Status Extension

Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we will be extending our Airpoints™ Elite, Gold and Silver members' status for a 12-month period.

We recognise that during this time, our Airpoints™ Elite, Gold and Silver members may experience difficulty  reaching the usual Status Points threshold to retain their membership status.

What is the Frequent Flyer Status Extension?

All members who are Elite, Gold and Silver tier status as at 20 March 2020 will have their current tier extended for an extra 12 months.

For our Elite members, we will be adding an Elite Banked Year to Elite members' accounts which will be automatically redeemed should you not retain Elite status.

For our Gold and Silver members, we are applying a process to provide a year at their current tier status. Some of these members will have already earned enough Status Points with their own activity to keep this status. So we will be applying this status extension to their membership accounts as a one time extension, and if this is not required by 31 March 2022 it will expire.

Eligible Airpoints Members who hold Elite, Gold or Silver tier status on 31 January 2021 will have their current tier extended for a further 12 months. 

Frequent Flyer Benefits

These are unchanged and all unused Recognition Upgrades, Elite member Valet Parking eVouchers or Silver member Air New Zealand Lounge eVouchers will be valid until your current review date. The new benefits will be added to your account at the start of your new year, as is the case today.

Please note that new membership packs won't be sent out for the status extension and no new hotel or rental car upgrade vouchers will be issued. Instead, any current hotel or rental car upgrade vouchers will be honoured for the full tier status extension period.

New Elite or Gold bag tags also won't be issued, instead you can continue to use your existing Elite or Gold bag tags when travelling with us.

Membership cards

With this current change in process we will not be issuing any new Elite, Gold or Silver membership cards or packs. If you hold an active OneSmart™ account, please see below. Members will be required to use their digital Airpoints membership card, which is available in the Air NZ mobile app. This digital card will always display the correct  expiry date. You can find this in the App as follows: click on the  Airpoints tab  located at the bottom of the phone screen, and then tap on the digital Airpoints card.

OneSmart cards

Members who have an active OneSmart account will receive a new card prior to the end of their OneSmart expiry date.

Airpoints partners

All of our New Zealand based members who wish to swipe their current physical card or scan their digital card at our Airpoints partners are able to continue to do so, just as they do now, even once the physical card has expired. The digital card will be refreshed to display the new card expiry date.

Elite Partner cards

We will not be sending new Elite Partner cards to our members over this period. We ask that all Elite Partners ensure they always include their Airpoints  number in any Air New Zealand or Qualifying partner flights when travelling to ensure they receive their Elite Partner travel benefits.

Members on Status Points - Parental Hold

Any members who were approved to receive the Status Points - Parental Hold prior to 20 March 2020 will be eligible to this 12-month extension at the expiry date of their Parental Hold.

Recognition Upgrades

Members will receive new Recognition Upgrades at the start of the new membership year, as is the case today: Silver - 1, Gold - 2, Elite - 2 long haul and 1 short haul. All unused Recognition Upgrades will still be valid until the end of your current membership year, at which time these are expired from your account.

Where will I see this change?

Elite members will start to see this Elite banked year added into their Airpoints account from 20-31 March 2020. There is no action required by Gold and Silver members. We'll take care of the arrangements for you when your membership is up for review.

How do I upgrade a tier?

Just as we do today, we will be measuring our members' accounts to see whether they have earned enough Status Points to move up the tiers, Silver to Gold and Gold to Elite.

We will send a new card and pack to any members who upgrade during this period.

What happens when I upgrade a tier?

When a Silver member upgrades to Gold status due to their activity, they will receive the new Gold membership benefits for a period of 12 months, unless they then move up to Elite.

The Silver extension is not required for this member and is removed from their account.

When a Gold member upgrades to Elite status due to their activity, they will receive the new Elite membership benefits for a period of 12 months.

The Gold extension is not required for this member and is removed from their account.
