About our reporting

Data and commentary in Air New Zealand's 2018 Sustainability Report is for the year ended 30 June 2018 unless otherwise stated. 

Air New Zealand's organisational boundary for sustainability reporting encompasses the companies listed in GHG Inventory 2018 report which incorporate legal entities or facilities over which Air New Zealand has equity share, financial control or operational control over, unless otherwise stated. Air New Zealand's reporting process and emissions classifications are consistent with international protocols and standards.

In developing content for the report, we considered the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Principles for Defining Report Content of Stakeholder Inclusiveness, Sustainability Context, Materiality and Completeness.

To help improve our reporting we engaged with a third-party provider to agree a sample of reported non-financial information in our report to supporting documentation and provide observations and recommendations.

External Assurance

We engaged independent assurance provider Deloitte to provide reasonable assurance over our 2018 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report in accordance with International Standard on Assurance Engagements (New Zealand) 3410 (revised): Assurance Engagements on Greenhouse Gas Statements (‘ISAE (NZ) 3410').

Our material issues

Our purpose at Air New Zealand is to supercharge New Zealand's success socially, environmentally and economically. Our material issues relate to how Air New Zealand delivers on this purpose and creates value for our stakeholders as well as our business.

Each year we identify our material issues based on their potential impact on our business performance and their importance to our stakeholders – including our customers, employees, partners, investors and the communities in which we operate. Our material issues inform our strategic priorities, sustainability approach and reporting.

We engage with a wide range of stakeholders, internally and externally, to identify our material issues. We also consider:

  • Feedback from customers, investors and communities
  • Feedback from our Sustainability Advisory Panel, who are subject matter experts in a wide range of topics, including sustainable development, Māori culture and intercultural understanding, conservation, sustainable tourism, climate policy, aviation industry economics, sustainable consumption and societal wellbeing
  • Topics raised by our Board of Directors
  • Feedback from our Sustainability Executive Steering Group, which includes our Chief Strategy, Networks and Alliances Officer, Chief Ground Operations Officer (from 28 September 2018), Chief Marketing and Customer Officer and Chief Operations Integrity and Standards Officer
  • Risks identified in our Enterprise Risk Management Profile and annual business planning processes
  • Engagement with key industry and sustainability bodies
