grabaseat hits 100,000 milestone

4 April 2007

Air New Zealand expects to sell its 100,000th ludicrously low airfare on grabaseat this week.

To mark the milestone, Air New Zealand will give the customer who purchases the 100,000th fare two return economy seats on its inaugural flight to Vancouver, along with three night's accommodation at Whistler ski resort.

Launched in July 2006 and available only on airnewzealand.co.nz, grabaseat has been phenomenally successful with customers wanting ridiculously low fares within New Zealand and to Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Last week Air New Zealand added a long-haul destination to grabaseat for the first time, offering 220 $496 return fares to Los Angeles, which sold out in 55 minutes. Yesterday it again delighted customers with the offer of a $498 return fare to Shanghai.

Air New Zealand General Manager Marketing Steve Bayliss said today the airline anticipated hitting 100,000 sales on grabaseat sometime this week.

"New Zealanders' response to grabaseat over the past nine months has been remarkable. Grabaseat is designed to encourage spontaneous travel, and has already provided tens of thousands of Kiwis the opportunity to enjoy holidaying in their own country."

Mr Bayliss said the airline wanted to delight the customer who bought the 100,000th fare by offering them the trip of a lifetime to Air New Zealand's newest long-haul destination, Vancouver. The airline announced in February that it would launch direct flights to Vancouver in November.

Grabaseat fares change daily, with savvy customers checking daily to see which routes are on special.

Mr Bayliss said traffic to airnewzealand.co.nz had more than doubled since grabaseat was launched.
