Air New Zealand launches heavily discounted fares to the Pacific Islands

11 October 2006

Flights to the Pacific Islands just got cheaper.

On the back of its popular grabaseat online campaign launched three months ago, Air New Zealand today added Pacific Island destinations to the campaign, starting with a one way launch airfare today of $129 from Auckland to Rarotonga.

grabaseat is an online campaign offering a range of ludicrously low airfares posted daily on the Air New Zealand website.

"grabaseat is poised to change the way New Zealanders view domestic and short haul leisure travel by encouraging spontaneous trips made possible through dramatically discounted airfares," said Air New Zealand Group General Manager Short Haul Norm Thompson.

"Like our domestic grabaseat offering, our Pacific Island grabaseat fares will be significantly discounted to give New Zealanders the opportunity to see the surrounding islands - great for romantic long weekends or weeklong family holidays."

Today's announcement means travellers can now take advantage of heavily discounted airfares both domestically and to all Pacific Island destinations that Air New Zealand flies to.

"grabaseat is already revolutionising how people travel domestically with more than 20,000 people visiting the grabaseat website each day to check the airfares offered - a response higher than even we expected," said Mr Thompson.

Since launch Air New Zealand has offered more than 55,000 domestic grabaseat fares, starting from $29 for one way flights.

"We have grown the domestic leisure travel market with this unique and innovative campaign and we intend to do the same with the new Pacific Islands offering."

Air New Zealand currently operates eight direct Pacific Island services from Auckland to Fiji, Rarotonga, Niue, Norfolk Island, Noumea, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga, plus a direct service from Christchurch to Rarotonga. From 29 October Air New Zealand will also launch a weekly service to Vanuatu.
