New Zealand - Wellington

Wellington, New Zealand.

Wellington is New Zealand's capital city.

It is home to government as well as some of the best museums, events, shopping and café scene in the country.

The Beehive is the odd-shaped parliament building our politicians run the country from and is free to visit for those curious about such things. Across the road is Westpac Stadium - home of Wellington rugby teams the Lions and Hurricanes and the Wellington Phoenix football team. It's also a venue for concerts, events and exhibitions from all over the world. But if it's cricket you're into, then the Basin Reserve is for you.

Probably Wellington's most famous attraction is Te Papa Museum. Maori for "Our place", this is New Zealand's national museum. It tells the story of our country through photos, artefacts and treasures. It also hosts fabulous visiting shows and admittance is free.

There are several companies that run tours in Wellington. Try a chocolate tour, boutique beer tasting, helicopter or food tour. Get a guide to take you on an historical walking tour or even shopping - if you need help with that!

Shopping is a big attraction for visitors as the city is easily walkable. From Lambton Quay to Cuba Street you'll find malls, high street stores and designer boutiques. And from Lambton Quay, a must-do is to take the cable car up to the Botanic Gardens. Built in 1902 this quaint carriage ride opens onto sweeping views of the harbour and city.

This stunning harbour glistens on a sunny day and surrounding it are bars and restaurants - perfect for afternoon of people-watching over a glass of fine New Zealand wine.

Accommodation runs from backpackers through to 5-star hotels. Choose a room with views across the harbour, near the shops, or right in the heart of the CBD to be close enough to walk home after a great night out.
