Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand.
No matter what the weather is up to there are so many fun activities to enjoy, events to be a part of, stunning views to photograph and plenty of places to kick back and relax in luxury.
The daring can go skydiving, bungy jumping, white water rafting, jetboating and hiking. The more sedate will love wine tasting in nearby vineyards or venturing to Milford Sound to cruise on the lake or even take a four-day hike.
If you loved Lord of the Rings, you'll be excited to know that much of the stunning scenery was filmed around here. Take a 4WD tour through Lord of the Rings country or hire a car and drive to nearby Wanaka or picturesque Arrowtown.
The ski season typically starts in early June and runs until early October. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are closest with Cardrona and Treble Cone a little further afield. And Queenstown really comes to life in winter. The annual Queenstown Winter Festival is a 10-day event of fun activities, live music, national and international celebrities making random appearances, and a whole lot more.
The hub of Queenstown's CBD has a relaxed village feel on the edge of the lake. Cafes and bars spill onto brick footpaths and pedestrianised lanes are lined with shops. You'll find local fashion designers and international brands, as well as great souvenirs and gifts.
A Queenstown holiday would not be complete without tasting the local wines. Central Otago is famous for its Pinot Noir and you'll find many vineyards with restaurants. Very good Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and bubbles are also produced around here.
Accommodation in Queenstown caters for every budget. There are 36 luxury lodges, boutique hotels and resorts, more than 100 self-contained motel units and serviced apartments. There are backpackers and holiday parks as well as B&B's and homestays - but book ahead, especially if you're planning a winter visit.
