New Zealand - Nelson and Blenheim

Marlborough, New Zealand.

Welcome to Nelson and Blenheim.

Nelson and it's little sister city Blenheim sit at the top of the South Island and boast the most sunshine hours in the country. But Nelson is a whole lot more than just a city. It covers five picturesque regions from the tip of the Southern Alps, across wine country and beyond to stunning beaches.

This is a fabulous region for wine tasting weekends and to explore the outdoors. Even in winter the weather is mild and the region is blessed with many clear sunny days.

Nelson is famous for its numerous art galleries and working studios where you'll find potters, sculptors, painters and weavers - to name just a few of the artists producing unique works. Every October the iconic 10-day Arts Festival includes theatre, dance, comedy, music and an assortment of fun and quirky activities and events.

Budding fashion designers will love visiting the World of Wearable Art Gallery which houses many of the weird and wonderful garments from these amazing shows in a magical atmosphere that recreates the famous annual awards ceremony.

A Saturday market in Montgomery Square is where you'll pick up gifts and crafts as well as organic fruit, vegetables, freshly baked breads and locally produced gourmet food.

Travel further afield and you'll reach stunning Abel Tasman National Park where tranquil lagoons are edged by golden beaches. This photographer's dream is a perfect spot for kayaking or even camping for a few days. Closer to town Tahunanui Beach is great for wind surfing, fishing and swimming. There is also a fun park here and the kids will love with a hydroslide and bumper boats, mini golf, a BMX course and skate park.

Accommodation options in Nelson range from backpacker to luxury lodges. Self-catering motels and holiday parks are also fun and affordable. Holiday parks are not all about pitching tents these days! Most offer everything from tent sites and caravans to motels and self-contained cabins.
